Ecological Landscaping Association 14th Annual Winter Conference

ELA presents: a full day Permaculture Intensive Workshop with David Jacke, Dynamics Ecological Design, and Jono Neiger, Regenerative Design, on March 6, 2008 followed by the 14th annual Conference & Eco-Marketplace on March 7 & 8, 2008. This premier event includes 25 workshops presented by preeminent educators, writers, and practitioners in the field of ecological landscaping. With over 40 exhibitors and live demonstrations, the Eco-Marketplace showcases landscape techniques, information, products, and services needed to create and manage healthy communities. In addition, each day features an optional meal with keynote speaker: March 6 – TBA; March 7 - John Todd, author and co-founded of New Alchemy Institute, Ocean Arks International, and Living Technologies Inc.; and March 8 - Tom Wessels, author and educator at Antioch University New England.

Introduction to Forest Gardening

Sun. 3/16 – Introduction to Forest Gardening - 9am – 5pm - $40 - UVM
Permaculture designers Keith Morris (Prospect Rock Permaculture) and Mark Krawczyk (Keyline Vermont) lead a day-long introduction to the concepts, design and maintenance of forest gardens – integrated gardens modeled on the structure of natural forests that incorporate fruiting trees, shrubs and vegetables, fertility providing plants, medicinals, beneficial insect habitat and more. Forest gardens can be as simple or complex as you like and are well suited to compact urban lots.

Keith Morris (Prospect Rock Permaculture) is an organic farmer, natural builder, and environmental educator who designs healthy and healing human ecosystems. His work combines wild ecological restoration with human community building and diverse, nutrient-dense food production. He is a Permaculture Instructor on the faculties of Sterling College and the Yestermorrow Design Build school.

Mark Krawczyk is a permaculture designer, traditional woodworker, natural builder and landscaper who resides in Burlington, VT. He spent four years traveling the US and UK, apprenticing with the likes of the Cob Cottage Company, Kiko Denzer, Drew Langsner, coppice forester Ben Law and the Central Rocky Mountain Permaculture Institute. He maintains a small woodworking business - RivenWoodCrafts, is a member of Seven Generations Natural Builders, and is currently developing ‘Keyline Vermont’, a sustainable farm design/consulting business. Community Gardens For Vermont Conference

NOFA-NH's 6th Annual Winter Conference: Local and Organic: the Sustainable Future

Location: Winnisquam Regional High School in Tilton, NH

On Saturday, March 1, 2008, the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New Hampshire (NOFA-NH) will host
its Sixth Annual Winter Conference, titled “Local and Organic: the Sustainable Future”. The Conference
will be held at Winnisquam Regional High School in Tilton, NH, from 8:30 am until 5:30 pm. The preregistration
cost for full conference attendance is $45; children between 5 and 12 are invited to attend an allday
program for $30. Discounts of $10 apply for NOFA-NH members for both the conference and children’s
program. The cost for lunch, which will feature local and organic foods, is $15 each, $7.50 for children.
Attendees who bring a six-serving potluck dish eat for free. An all-day vendor fair plus a raffle will be held from
9:00 am until 5:00 pm in the school gymnasium.
A sustainable future based on local organic production and growing local economies will be the
major focus of the Winter Conference. Presenters from New Hampshire and Vermont will offer their experience
and expertise in topics ranging from beginning and advanced organic farming and gardening, organic land care,
sustainability, raising livestock, alternative energy, and producing and selling locally. Representatives from the
Farm-to-School and Farm-to-Restaurant initiatives, as well as produce buyers from co-ops, stores and
restaurants will be available at the vendor fair to discuss how local producers can connect to those markets.
Scheduled speakers include the authors Paul Tukey (The Organic Lawn Care Manual and People, Places & Plants
magazine), Ron Krupp (The Woodchuck’s Guide To Gardening) and Ross Conrad (Natural Beekeeping: Organic
Approaches to Modern Apiculture), plus Mark Fulford, David Yarrow, Dan Kittredge, and many others.
Restaurant owner Tod Murphy will be the keynote speaker. Tod will discuss the issues he has encountered
sourcing local and organic products for his restaurant and smokehouse. In addition, Tod will present an
economic model and vision, The Farmers Diner, as a solution to sourcing locally.
Tod Murphy will be introduced by the new State of NH Agriculture Commissioner, Lorraine Merrill.
Commissioner Merrill and her family are farmers on the Seacoast and in 2003 they received an American
Farmland Trust “Stewards of the Land” Award. Commissioner Merrill will also be available during the
conference to meet one-on-one with attendees.
The conference will offer Pesticide Safety Education Program recertification credits to producers and continuing
education units to Master Gardeners and NOFA Accredited Organic Land Care Professionals.
